Algae Blooms in Lake Yuma

The City of Yuma would like its residents to be aware of a blue-green algae bloom that has occurred at Lake Yuma.

Algae blooms occur naturally in nutrient-rich water when temperatures rise. The water at Lake Yuma is extremely rich in nutrients resulting from fertilizers and chemicals that enter into storm water runoff. That makes Lake Yuma very susceptible to these types of blooms.

We urge residents to be cautious around the water at Lake Yuma. Blue-green algae blooms contain Cyanobacteria, a microscopic organism that can produce toxic chemicals that are dangerous to humans and pets.

The City of Yuma is working on a solution and will consult with water biologists on Monday.
